A fun way to practice creating patterns is by using posted notes :

  1. Take four square posted notes and align them together to create a larger square.

  2. Draw your pattern.

3. Next, move posted notes 1 and 3 over to align with the right edge of posted notes 2 and 4.

4. Draw along the seam making sure to overlap your motifs along the edges.

5. Next, move posted notes 2 and 1 down so they are underneath 4 and 3.

4. Draw along the seam making sure to overlap your motifs along the edges.

6. Now you have your rough repeat pattern.

To digitize, color, and finalize:

  1. Take a picture with your phone, turn the image to black and white, and crop.

  2. Vectorize your drawing in Illustrator either using the pen tool or the image trace tool.

  3. Clean up the edges along the seam so everything lines up and place it on a 6x6 art board.

  4. Add color to your pattern.

  5. Place a 6x6 square (no fill and no outline) behind everything. Make sure it’s aligned with your art board.

  6. Select everything and drag your pattern into the swatches panel.

  7. Draw a large circle and test out your pattern making any adjustments as needed.
